US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from New York's 5th district for one term from March 1919 to March 1921. Born in Glasgow, Scotland he immigrated to the US with his family in 1886 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. After attending public schools in Long Island City and Brooklyn, New York City, New York he graduated from the New York Law School and was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in Brooklyn. In 1918 he was the Democratic nominee for US Congress from New York's 5th district and was elected. He was not a candidate for re-nomination, and resumed his law practice in New York City. In 1927 he was elected a justice of the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court for the 2nd district and served from January 1928 until January 1935, when he was designated an associate justice of the appellate division and served until his retirement in December 1952. In January 1953 he was appointed an official referee of the supreme court and continued in this role July 1955, when he assumed the office of State Administrator of the Judicial Conference of the State of New York until his death at the age of 77. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
