|Birth: ||Aug. 28, 1886|
|Death: ||Sep. 11, 1980|
Son of William Edgar Little and Allena Mae Manley.
Husband of Effie Gertrude Saunders.
Beloved father of Elsie Isabel, Leonidas Edgar "Lee", Rivers Chester "Pat", Ray Dale, Carl Clinton, Helen America, and Paul William Little.
Siblings were Eva C., Jesse Edward, Bennett Viska, Roy M., Georgia E., Ezra, Effie Elizabeth, and Cuba Ketchel Little.
My grandfather, Franklin Lorn Little, was the oldest of nine children. He grew up near Cheshire, Ohio, a small village on the banks of the Ohio River. As the son of a hard working coal miner, he went to work in the coal mines with his father at a very early age. For 46 years, he remained in the mines, working from early morning until late night alongside his father, brothers, uncles, cousins, and related families.
Descendants of Scot-Irish immigrants these men had the grit and determination of their forefathers who had left Ireland in the hopes of finding a better life for their children. They worked hard, prayed hard, loved hard, and at times drank hard. They were men who joined every war this country fought, and they were not defeated. They were loved and respected by those who knew them.
My mother said that no matter how hard times were, Granddad always made sure they had fresh oranges for Christmas. He had seven children and by the time the youngest was four, grandchildren were already moving into the house with them because of the early death of their father.
At the end of 46 years, Granddad left the mines, and worked 15 more years for the Republic Steel Co., Canton, Ohio. When he retired, he went back to the area where he had spent most of his life, free to go fishing on the riverbank, enjoy his church, family, and old friends. It is there that he is buried in the beautiful old cemetery of Gravel Hill among the many people he knew and loved.
This memorial is sponsored by granddaughter Willi Anderson.
