REBECKA JANE VEAL HESTER
30 May 1854 – 20 Jul 1928
MRS. HESTER DIED JULY 20th
On Friday night, 20 Jul 1928, Mrs. R. B. Hester (Rebecka Jane Veal Hester) was called by the Great All Father from mortality to immortality. She died as she had lived, a devoted Christian wife and mother. To the broken hearts of her suffering family we would say, take to you the great controlling power of the Christ that she loved. "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, from which none ever wake to weep." To the bereaved husband and children we would say, is it not better that she sleeps in Paradise instead of languishing on a bed of pain?
In all the various relations of life that she filled as wife, mother, friend and neighbor, the even tenor of her noble life was far beyond reproach.
Gentle, kind, modest, with silent devotion she practiced Christian benevolence. She went when she was needed and ministered to the suffering. She loved her neighbors and saw that they knew her love by her kind, sympathetic deeds.
The many friends of this Christian lady remembered her with an abundance of flowers. It was most appropriate that the close of this life should be accentuated with flowers. As the beautiful book of her life is closed, remembrance of a thousand deeds of kindness that she did stand out like dazzling jewels on a lovely robe. Her best monument will be the kindness which accentuated all her earthly pilgrimage.
The funeral service was held at the First Baptist church of which she was a member, on Sunday afternoon, 22 Jul 1928, at 3 o'clock by her pastor Rev W. E. Lockler who paid her a worthy tribute. Her favorite hymn, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" was her requiem. Interment was in Cedarwood Cemetery (Roanoke, AL).
Mrs. Hester is survived by her husband Rev R. B. Hester and three children, two of this city, Mrs. T. E. Calhoun and Mr. C. M. Hester and Mrs. Baxter Taylor of Columbus, GA. A friend
