Mrs. Robert Cowell

Clara Cowell (Mrs. Robert) of Mount Vernon, Wash. died July 5, 1978, at the Burton Nursing Home in Burlington, Wash. from infirmities of old age. She was 88.

Mrs. Cowell, nee Clara Whitson, was born November 5, 1889, to Robert and Ada L. (Bullock) Whitson, pioneer citizens of the Northfield area. Her father was an early rural mail carrier here, carrying the then Route 5 out of Northfield before his retirement in 1920. (Her uncle, Russel Whitson, was rural carrier on Route 3 at the same time). The Robert Whitsons lived on the corner of Sixth and Winona in Northfield.

Mrs. Cowell was a teacher at Hinckley, High Prairie and Castle Rock before her marriage to Robert Cowell in 1918. Many of the children who perished in the great Hinckley fire were former pupils in her classes.

Mr. and Mrs. Cowell moved to Mount Vernon, Washington, soon after his return from World War I service. They had no children of their own, but brought up several from families that were in financial trouble. One of those children was Rose Gardner, now manager of the rest home where Clara Cowell lived the past few years.

Mrs. Cowell is survived by a nephew Ray Davenport of Whitehal, Mont.; a cousin, Claude Whitson of Stanton; a sister-in-law, Ethelyn Cowell (Mrs. John); several nieces, newphews and cousins by marriage. Among them are Don Kimber, Lucy Cowell, Myrtle Frederickson, Ora Sommers, Ora Schonning, Janet Pine, Beth Closson, Richard Cowell.

She was preceeded in death by her parents; her husband, who died December 28, 1964; two sisters, Rose Davenport (Mrs. Les) who lived at Dennison and Mrs. Minnie Gillette who lived in Seattle, Wash.; and one brother, D. W. Whitson.

The funeral service was held July 11 and interment was next to her husband in Mount Vernon. One of the pallbearers was Roger Leonhardi of Oak Harbor, Wash., husband of the former Wynne Prehn. The daughter of the late Fanny Cowell Prehn, Mrs. Leonhardi, is formerly of Waterville.
