Dr. Joseph F. Calta, former superintendent of the Lorain City Schools from 1965-1975, died at his home last night after a long illness.
Born in Cleveland he had lived in Lorain since 1946. Mr Calta, 74, was fond of saying he was really "39 and holding."
An Army veteran, he had been an Air Corps captian in 1943.
Mr. Calta began his years with the Lorain City Schools in 1946 as a social studies teacher at Whitter Jr. High.
He then served as a counselor and assistant director of secondaary education at Lorain High School. When Admiral King High School opened in 1960, he was named its first principal and returned to teaching there from 1975-1978.
Mr. Calta received his bachelor"s dregree from Kent State University and his master's and doctorate from Case Western Reserve University.
He served on the board of trustees of Lorain County Community College and was a member of the Lorain Masonic Lodge 552 and Scottish Rite., Al Koran Shrine, Lorain County Shine Club, and American Legion Post 30.
He was a volunteer at Lorain Community Hospital and was past lieuteant governor and president of Lorain Kiwanis.
He also was a member of First United methodist Church, Lorain, and served as past president of its senior Fellowship.
He was board president of the Lorain Family YMCA in 1946 and served as a member for many years and as past president and board member of the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. Calta served as a board member of the Lorain International Festival, and was in Kiwanis Key Club for youth, and Shriner's Luncheon Club.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Greeenwood) Calta of Lorain.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 1-8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Lorain, where services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Sara Anne O'Donnell officating.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ridge Hill Memorail Park, Lorain.
Memorials may be made to the Lorain Family YMCA.
