Chief Justice, Utah Supreme Court

Judge Corfman was Chief Justice of the Utah Supreme Court, from 1919 to 1923. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1890, was a member of the Constitutional Convention for Utah in 1895, and signed the Utah state constitution in 1896. He became a Justice on the Utah State Supreme Court in 1917, became Chief Justice in 1919, and served until 1923. After leaving the Court, he was appointed to the Utah Public Utilities Commission and became President of the Commission in May 1926. He was a Mason and was elected to the thirty-third degree Court of Honor by the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons.

He married Ivy Gladys LOAR on June 8, 1898, in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the First Congregational Church. His wife was a college-educated school teacher. The judge and his wife had two daughters: Aileen (b. 1905, m. BAXTER) and Jessie Elizabeth (b. 1909, b. OTTENSTEIN). He was the son of John CORFMAN and Catharine HUFFORD. He was the grandson of Daniel HUFFORD and Nancy WELTY.

His name is included in the 1909 HUFFORD FAMILY HISTORY, on page 128. He is listed with his parents; his parents are pictured on that page.

Early Lawmaker Of Utah Passes

Salt Lake City, Feb. 3 (AP)
Elmer Ellsworth Corfman, 86, one of the last three living members of the Utah constitutional convention of 1896, died yesterday in Hollywood, Calif.

Corfman also was a former Utah state supreme court justice.

He had made his home in Hollywood for the past decade.

He practiced law in Provo until 1917, when he was elected to the supreme court. He served one four-year term. He was appointed by Gov. Charles R. Mabey to the state public utilities commission, and served in that body until 1935. When it was reorganized as the public service commission, he continued as chairman for one year, when he retired.
