Gustavus Stoughton (1762-1847) Age 85 years.
(s/o John6; Timothy5; Capt. Thomas4; Ens. Thomas3; Thomas, Sr.2; Rev. Thomas1)

Gustavus Stoughton was born on 31 Jan. 1762/63, in Windsor, Connecticut and he later removed to Lenox, Massachusetts. There is one source (His grave marker) which says he is a native of Sutherton, CT and this would be present day Southington, CT. According to the Revolutionary War Pension Abstracts, in 1780, he enlisted in the Massachusetts Regular Line, at Lennox, Mass. and served in the Revolution. He is reported to be a private and he served 14 months, in Capt. Nobel's company of Wood's Regiment. Sometime after the war he removed to New York and applied for a pension there, in Chazy, Clinton County, New York, in 1832. He died in 23 Oct. 1847. He is buried in Riverview Cemetery Chazy, N.Y. In 1832, his daughter, Roxanna Sterns, (Stiles lists her name as Rixa) of Chazy, Clinton County, New York swore affidavit to his service. Gustavus's daughter, Mindwell and his brother, Livy, swore affidavit and signed "P.o.A." on 3 Nov. 1854 as one of the surviving children of the soldier.

He married Mary Stone, born 1758; died 24 Mar. 1823 in the 64th year of her age - Other sources have her dates as follows: (1765- 24 Mar. 1828) This inscription on her grave marker is as follows: Lo: where this silent marble weeps/ A wife, a friend, a Mother sleeps/ A heart within whose sacred cell/ The peaceful virtues lovd to dwell - Mary Stone Stoughton.

Mary Stone was the d/o Enos Stone (1744-1815) and Sarah Stoddard (1745-1818), both of Litchfield, CT and who, both later died in Rochester, NY. Enos Stone was the s/o Enos Stone (1709-1747) and Sarah Munson (1713-1736). Enos Stone (1709) was the s/o Daniel Stone and Elizabeth Talmadge and Sarah Munson was the d/o John Munson and Sarah Cooper. Sarah Stoddard, w/o Enos Stone (1744) was the d/o James Stoddard (1714-1749) and Abigail Peck (1719-1757). James Stoddard was the s/o John Stoddard and Sarah Camp and Abigail Peck was the d/o William Peck and Lois Stanley.

Gustavus is the f/o:

1. De Chauncey (Delancey, DeClancy)Stoughton, born abt. 1784.
2. Polly (Mary) Stoughton, born 16 Dec. 1785; died 14 Jul 1819.
3. Parmelia (Pamelia)(Pamela) Stoughton, 1788.
4. William W. Stoughton, born 1791.
5. Elizabeth Stoughton, born 1792; buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Chazy, NY.
6. Benjamin Franklin Stoughton, born 1795+/- 2 yr.
7. Eliza (Eloisa)(Elvira) Stoughton, born 1797.
8. Araminta Stoughton, born 28 July1800/01; died 18 April 1830, in Chazy, NY. Buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Chazy, NY. Tombstone inscription follows: ¡°Araminta, daughter of Gustavus & Mary Stoughton, died April 18 1830, in the 30th year of her age. Allure me no longer false / glading charms,/ The Saveour invites me I'll go/ to his arms,/ At the banquet of mercy I hear/ there is room,/ O, here may I feast with his/ children at home.

9. Mindwell A. (Ann) Stoughton, born 16 July 1803, in Mass. or Canada); died 16 June 1892,age 88 Years and 11 months, in Chazy, N. Y. In 1880, she was a Weaver and was living with sister, Sarah M. Stoughton; born abt. 1819, in New York. Except for this census we have no other record of this child, Sarah M. Stoughton, unless she was erroneously listed as a sister and in fact is the wife of Gustavus¡¯s Grandson, Alansing G. Stoughton. Now there is a note, with one source, concerning this grave stone of Sarah M. Stoughton, in the Riverview Cemetery of Chazy, NY and it reads, in quotations, as follows: Sarah M. w/o A.G. Stoughton, died July 15, 1902. [Note: Sarah d/o Gustavus and Mary Stone.] Alansing G. Stoughton. Now, if this note is read literally, this would mean that Alansing married his Aunt and that is not correct. Alansing, in fact married Sarah Mary Deal, who was born in Canada, in 1820 and died in Chazy, NY, in 1904¡¦this Sarah, listed here with this family, would then would be the daughter of Gustavus and would be the sister of Mindwell and, accordingly, I have listed her, below as a child of Gustavus.

10. Menduna (Mandana) Stoughton, born 1807.
11. Roxyanna Stoughton, born 1807, died 1808. Twin to Menduna.
12. Roxanna Stoughton, born aft. 1808; married _____Sterns.
13. Francis Wagoner Stoughton, born 1811. (SEE NOTE, BELOW)
14. Sarah Mary Stoughton, born 15 Oct. 1820; died 19 Jan. 1902.

NOTE: Francis Stoughton is listed as a child with this family and we have no definitive proof of this relationship. He is listed here on the basis of two separate and distinct family trees on ancestry.com and the fact that the 1840 census has him as the neighbor of Gustavus, in Chazy, NY. That’s shaky and purely circumstantial, at best, but it is all I have at the moment. Please contact me with any corrections.
