William J. Wood, 89, New York Avenue, died Monday at his home.
Mr. Wood was born Jan. 21, 1916, in Watertown, son of William Henry and Madeline Phillips Wood. He attended school in Montreal and Granby, Quebec, then attended Ogdensburg Free Academy for a year and graduated from Watertown High School in 1934. He then moved to California, where he attended Los Angeles City College, studying in the performing arts program for one semester.
Mr. Wood returned to Ogdensburg in 1936 and worked as an apprentice undertaker for Archibald McLellan on Lake Street. In 1938, he became a ward attendant at St. Lawrence State Hospital until entering the School of Nursing at the Hospital. After affiliating from 1940 to 1941 at Bellevue Hospital, New York City, he graduated, becoming a registered nurse.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, serving through World War II and receiving an honorable discharge as a pharmacist's mate first class in 1945.
Upon returning from the war, he was appointed head nurse at St. Lawrence State Hospital and subsequently graduated from St. Mary's School of Anesthesia, Rochester, in 1952. He worked as a nurse anesthetist with Dr. Paul Campanella and Dr. David D. DePue at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital from 1952 to 1963.
Mr. Wood received a bachelor of science degree in 1959 and a master of science in administration in 1960, both from Syracuse University. He was appointed chief supervising nurse, a temporary position for the state of New York in Albany, for a period before returning to St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as chief supervising nurse in 1965. He retired from that position on Aug. 1, 1975, after more than 37 years of service. For several months before retiring, he also served as acting director of education at the hospital.
Mr. Wood was a member of the Notre Dame parish. Since 1965, he was a member of Ogdensburg Rotary Club, where he was past president and past district governor of Rotary District 7040 from 1975 to 1976.
He was also past president of St. Lawrence County United Way; past commander of St. Lawrence Power Squadron; past commander of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1-5, where he retired at the rank of vice captain; past member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, Seaway Lodge; a member of the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor A.D. Charbonneau Council; past member of Ogdensburg Elks Lodge; a member of American Legion Post 68; past chairman of the American Red Cross, West St. Lawrence Branch; past chairman of the Advisory Board of the Ogdensburg Salvation Army; past board member of the New York State Nurses Association, and past president of St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center School of Nursing Alumni Association.
He enjoyed boating on the St. Lawrence River and in the Finger Lakes, spending time outdoors and admiring flower gardens and photography.
A 1942 marriage to Elizabeth Raymo ended in divorce. On July 28, 1964, he married Mary Helen Jordan in Clayton. The latter Mrs. Wood was also a registered nurse at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, retiring in 1975. Since 1965, she had served as chief of nursing services and training.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
There was a prayer service Friday followed by a funeral Mass at Notre Dame Church with the Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Entombment followed at Foxwood Memorial Park.
