Elbert D. Waltz, 87, of 18th Street died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Columbus Community Care Center.

He retired from Cummins Engine Co. in 1976 where he had worked for 34 years. He was a member of Old Union United Church of Christ and was a 59–year member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge where he had been master in 1947 and 1953.

He was the first fire chief of Hartsville Volunteer Fire Department in 1945 and was instrumental in the building of the Hartsville Boy Scouts Community Center.

He formerly was active in the Gas and Steam Engine and Tractor Association in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan and had been active in Hope Heritage Days, Fort Vallonia Days and the Covered Bridge Festival in Matthews.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Ross Wallace officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to service time Wednesday.

A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to the Old Union United Church of Christ or the Hartsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Waltz was born Nov. 12, 1913, in Brown County, the son of Roy and Florence Ellen Bisel. He married Naomi Anne Whitesides on Aug. 8, 1936. She died Oct. 27, 1989.

Survivors include daughters, Beverly Massey and Barbara Stone, both of Columbus; a brother, Emmett Waltz of Edinburgh; grandchildren, Bruce and Victor Trotter, Jan Rynerson and Darryl Stone, all of Columbus; six great–grandchildren; and one great–great–granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Waltz, and sisters, Burlie Ashley and Laura Hamilton.
