W. H. AVISE LAID
TO REST LAST FRIDAY

W. H. Avise whose death was chron-
icled in last week's Herald and who
was laid to rest in the Altoona ceme-
tery on Wednesday afternoon of last
week, had lived to an age that is ex-
perienced by few, being 97 years, 10
months and 10 days old at his death.
He had been a resident of this com
munity since 1810. He had been a
very devoted and active member of
the Masonic order, having been a
order for over seventy-three years,
and had a gold certificate of member-
ship for the past twenty-nine years,
an honor whichis extended to all
Mason's who have been members of
the order for fifty years. He was
Master of the local Masonic lodge
in 1899 and 1900. He was also a
member of 0. E. S. Chapter No. 284.

He was a well preserved man being
of robust stature at the time of his
death and able to be about the house
and care for himself until a few days
before his death.

Funeral services were conducted
from the Methodist church by the
pastor Harold Jackson.

Following the sermon the service
was taken charge by King David lodge
No. 407 A. F. & A. M. of Altoona.
Bro. Tom Beaumont, of Creston, con
ducting the service after which the
body was escorted to the cemetery by
the Masonic order where it was con-
signed to the grave under the rit-
ualistic service of the order.

William Hewes Avise was born near
Quincy, Illinois on January 12, 1836
and passed- away November 22, 1933
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.
S. Hecker of Altoona, Iowa having
reached the age of 97 years,10 months
and 10 days.

On April 23, 1863 he was united
in marriage to Julia Cassandra Burr.
In the spring of 1890 they with the
immediate family moved to a farm
near Altoona, Iowa where on April
23, 1913 they celebrated their Golden
Wedding anniversary. On June 7,
1921 the faithful wife passed to her
reward. He was also preceeded by
two sons, Norman Nash and John
Edward Avise.

Surviving are three sons; A. P.
Avise, of Ventura, Iowa, D. E. Avise,
of Mason City, Iowa; W. H. Avise, of
Altoona, Iowa; and three daughters;
Mrs. W. S. Hecker, Mrs. C. L. Clark
and Mrs. 0. P. Mason all of Altoona;
21 grandchildren and 16 great grand-
children. With the exception of his
hearing, he retained all of his facul-
ties to a remarkable degree, often
relating incidents of pioneer life in
the state of his birth. He has been
a member of the Methodist Church
and of the Masonic order since early
manhood.

On last Wednesday morning at 1,
a. m. he quietly passed away a peaceful
ending of a long and useful life.

the W. H. Avise funeral on November
24th were; A. P. Avise and grandson
Raymond Callanan, of Ventura, Iowa;
Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Avise and son, Dean,
of Mason City, Miss Winniefred Hecker,
of Zearing; Miss Zella Hecker of Carroll;
Avise Hecker of Kansas City; Mrs, Elva
Griffith, Ed Avise, and Mrs. Jess Avise
and son also Miss Delia Avise, all of
Illinois.
