Mr. Edward S. Wilson, 82, of Damascus, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. He was the husband of Rita O'Neill Wilson, whom he married in 1941. Born Jan. 25, 1919, in Montvale, N.J., he was the third of five children born to Elwood Justin Wilson and Cora Florence MacDermand.

Mr. Wilson spent his early years in Montvale, N.J. Upon graduating from high school, he worked at Todd Shipyards in New York until joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He served as a navigator in the European Theater during World War II. He remained in the U.S. Air Force following the war, earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Auburn University in 1950, and a master's degree in Aerospace engineering from Princeton University in 1955. He attended reactor school at Oak Ridge National Laboratories between earning his degrees. He served at Valley Forge, Oak Ridge and Wright-Patterson AFB.

Mr. Wilson and his family moved to the Washington area in 1955. He was an original officer in the U.S. Air Force nuclear aircraft program and served at the Atomic Energy Commission. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years service, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After retiring from the Air Force, he remained in government service in the AEC space power program. He retired in
1973. Mr. Wilson and his family moved to a farm outside of Damascus in 1959. While there, he continued a lifelong love of nature and wildlife by transforming the farm into a nature preserve. He also bred Angus cattle for a time, collected antiques and taught computer-aided design at Montgomery College. He was active in Eyler's Valley Chapel in Thurmont for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Edward S. Wilson and wife Sharon of Savannah, Ga., Lindalee W. Brownstein and husband Barry of Columbus, Ohio, and Kerry Wilson and wife Deborah of Damascus; five grandchildren, Edward S. Wilson III, Gary Brownstein, Katherine Brownstein Knostman, Daniel Brownstein and Justin Griffin; two sisters, Eleanor W. Niedringhaus and Janet Geist, both of Florida; one brother, Justin Wilson of California; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Kooiman Brown.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Eyler's Valley Church, Thurmont. Interment will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Eyler's Valley Church, c/o Jess Walter, 2 Takoma St., Thurmont, Md. 21788, or to a favorite charity.
