Lucien F. Smith was a soldier in the Civil War, serving for the Union, from the 33rd Illinois Infantry, in Company E. He entered service on 28 Aug 1861 in Illinois, for 3 years, but was discharged for disability on 26 Dec 1861 at St. Louis, Missouri. For a few brief months in 1905, he was in hospital at the Fort Leavenworth U. S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers and was seen for general deafness. His Missouri death certificate informed by Frank P Smith, gave Lucien’s profession as “Retired Old Soldier”.
Parents in most family trees are given as Elijah and Silvia Childs Smith. Siblings: Susan Melinda Smith 20, Silvia Smith 15, Sarah Jane Smith 13—there may have been others.
LUCIEN SMITH DIES AT HOME OF HIS SON
Lucien F. Smith, one of Galena’s earliest, oldest and best known citizens, entered into rest last night between 8 and 9 o’clock at the home of his son Frank P. Smith, of Twenty-fourth and Empire streets in Joplin, after an illness of about a year.
Mr. Smith was 74 years of age and his health began failing several years ago. He located in Galena about thirty years ago and resided at this place continuously until about three years ago when he went to Illinois. After staying there about two years he returned to Joplin to make his home with his son.
He is survived by two sons, Frank P. and C. G. Smith, and one daughter, Miss May Smith. His wife died in the state asylum a few years ago and is buried in the Galena cemetery.
Mr. Smith was a member of Frank P. Blair Post No. 54, G. A. R., and also was a member of Galena lodge No. 9, A. O. U. W. Both of these orders will take part in the funeral.
The arrangements for the funeral will be made later.

SMITH FUNERAL TODAY
The funeral of Lucien F. Smith, the well known former Galena citizen who died Wednesday night at the home of his son, Frank Smith, at Twenty-fourth and Empire streets in Joplin, was held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Presbyterian church. Rev. J. R. Wilkie, of the Presbyterian church, preached the sermon and the funeral was conducted by the A. O. U. W. lodge, of which deceased had been a member a number of years. Interment was in Galena cemetery by the grave of his wife.
