Ogden – It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our handsome, sweet and kind father, Merlin Hurst, Jr. It is with extreme joy and happiness that we announce the grand reunion of our father and mother and many family members and good friends.

Dad was born May 28, 1926 in Fresno, Calif. to Cora Jacobs and Merlin Leo Hurst. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Logan, Utah. He attended Whittier Elementary where he was the marble shooting champion. He attended Logan Jr. High and Logan High Schools where he excelled in sports. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served a tour of duty in the South Pacific. He attended Utah State and Weber State University.

On Feb. 5, 1947, he married his sweetheart Marilyn M. Taylor in Ogden. Mom passed away March 31, 2007.

Dad was proud of the 36 years he worked as a telegraph operator for the Union Pacific Railroad in Ogden. At a second job he drove a truck for Gibbons and Reed and Fife Rock Products. He thoroughly enjoyed working in the road construction business and often talked about how much he would love to work again. After retiring from the railroad he worked five years at the Ogden City Mall where he made many friends.

Dad enjoyed collecting firewood during the summer months so he could enjoy the crackle of a warm fire during the winter. He built his own woodworking shop and loved the challenge of creating items from wood. Dad has a large collection of coins and enjoyed looking through his spare change in hopes of finding a treasure; he also collected batteries for all his grandkids needs. He loved setting up and tinkering with his many model trains. He was an avid lover of his three red cars: his Cadillac, his Lincoln but especially his 1967 Ford Galaxie convertible. He was a talented photographer and took pleasure in creating photo albums for his family. He loved watching Law & Order on his 52 inch TV.

He is survived by his children James M. (Gaye) Hurst, Roy, Constance M. H. (Paul) Kraft, Layton, Diane L Downs, Hooper, Robin H. Hill, Heber, Patrick K. Hurst, Ogden; and the cats Sally and Lilly, who kept him entertained. Also survived by his brother Jack (Paula) Hurst, Logan; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Preceded in death by his wife; parents and an infant son, Donald Lee Hurst.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Ogden City Cemetery, 20th and Madison Ave. Friends may call at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., on Thursday, June 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Many thanks to our good friend and neighbor David Bradley.
