Melvin E. South, 87, of Midlothian, Va., went to be with our Lord June 3, 2009 after battling cancer and diabetes for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey W. and Annie H. South of Chester. Mr. South was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and a retired federal and state employee with the Defense General Supply Center and the Virginia Department of Taxation.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Vincent South; two sons and their wives, Randy and Janet O'Brien South and Dale and Valerie Johnson South; two grandsons, Matthew and Jonathan South.
Mr. South was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, a WWII Army veteran, past Commander of American Legion Post 137 and past state Vice Commander for the American Legion. He was also a member of Manchester Masonic Lodge #14 and the ACCA Temple Provost Guard.
His family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday. Entombment will follow at Dale Memorial Park.
