Carver was a pilot with the 55th Pursuit Squadron, 20th Pursuit Group, at Barksdale Field, La. He was killed when his P-26A Peashooter pursuit airplane crashed at the conclusion of mass unit exercises at Chapman Field near Miami. Carver, whose name is misspelled CARTER in most official records, was a 1933 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, where he was a football star in 1931 and 1932, gaining national attention. Official records say he died Dec. 15, 1935, but contemporary accounts consistently point to a Dec. 16, 1935 date.
