Elton L. Palmateer, 54, of 232 Washington St., died Thursday at United Helpers Nursing Home, where he had resided since January 2005. He had been ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Mr. Palmateer was a radio operator for 16 years with Cardinal Canadian Coast Guard and then worked at Hacketts Hardware for eight years. He moved to North Carolina, where he was an electrician's helper for Telsrow's Electric, Belmont, and then worked for Cronland True Value Hardware, Lincolnton. He returned to the north country in 2003.
Born Dec. 16, 1951, in Bancroft, Ontario, son of James V. and Betty Carroll Palmateer , he graduated in 1970 from Hastings High School.
He married Irene M. "Reney" Taylor on June 23, 1979.
Mr. Palmateer enjoyed motorcycles and was a member of the American Motorcycle Association, the Retreads club, the Model Airplane Club and Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his wife are his mother and stepfather, a son and his fiancee, a daughter and her husband, a brother, two grandchildren and a nephew.
Two brothers, Dale and Ricky, and a sister, Wanda, died before him.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Frary Funeral Home with the Rev. Reginald S. Curtis officiating. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
