He joined the United States Navy as a midshipman in 1824 with the rank of lieutenant. He served on the USS Warren pursuing Greek pirates in the Mediterranean. he resigned his commission in July 1831 and became a sailor on merchant ships. Timothy died at sea in the Gulf of Mexico. The marker in this cemetery is simply a memorial for him erected by his brothers.

Inscription

This memorial marker was erected by his brothers after he was lost at sea. It is a traditional memorial for those lost at sea in the form of a broken column. It reads:
Timothy B. Field
Second Son of Rev. David D. Field
Born at Haddam, Conn.
May 21, 1809
Entered the Navy in 1824;
was an officer
of brilliant talent and high promise
supposed to have been
lost at sea
in 1836.
Though his grave is in the deep,
his memory is here
in the home of his kindred.
