Deceased Name: DAVIS, WOODROW ALVIN "PIG"
DAVIS, WOODROW ALVIN "PIG", a native of Green Forest, Arkansas, longtime resident of Columbus, Georgia, and resident of Mobile since 1990, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999. Mr. Davis, A Chief Petty Officer, U. S. Navy, during World War II, was Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's first football recruit at the University of Alabama and a member of the 1938 Rose Bowl Team. He began his own coaching career in 1939 in Northport, Alabama, and subsequently coached football at Tifton High School in Tifton, Georgia, Guntersville High School in Guntersville, Alabama, Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia, and Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia. He was a very successful coach and was named "Coach of the Year" in Georgia three times. He sent five sons to the University of Alabama, four of whom played football for Coach Paul Bryant. His son Robert graduated from the University of Alabama in 1967 with the highest grade point average in the College of Arts and Sciences. Coach Davis is survived by: his wife, Sadie Bohorfoush Davis; five sons, Dr. Timothy A. Davis of Birmingham, Dr. Robert A. Davis of Naps, Calif., Dr. Stephen A. Davis of Mobile, Dr. William A. Davis of Athens, Ala., and Dr. Michael R. Davis of Mobile; one daughter, Cynthia Susan Davis of Mobile; two sisters, Lula Berry of Gainsville, Missouri, and Elvira Alfred of Springfield, Missouri; and eight grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 15, at 10:00 A.M. from Our Savior Catholic Church on Cody Road. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 at the church.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Volunteers of America, 600 Azalea Road, Mobile, AL 36609, or to the Woodrow Alvin and Sadie Bohorfoush Scholarship Fund of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Alabama, Box 870268, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Pine Crest Funeral Home, 5651 Cottage Hill Road, Mobile, AL 36609, telephone number (334) 660-1155.
