Josephine Martin , 93, a 37-year resident of 145 Belmont Courts, died Friday evening at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.
Mrs. Martin tended the family farm on Arnold Road for many years, first for her father and later for her own family. She was a janitor's aide at Ogdensburg Free Academy for many years and retired in 1974 as a dietary aide at the former A. Barton Hepburn Hospital, now Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.
Mrs. Martin was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Cathedral. She enjoyed bingo, walking to her brother's home, socializing with family and friends, watching baseball games and playing cards. She also enjoyed animals, especially dogs and deer. She had an extensive rock collection from trips with her family and friends throughout the United States and abroad.
Born Mary Emma Josephine Jerue, Nov. 28, 1911, in Ogdensburg, daughter of Abraham John "Abbie" and Sarah Leroux Jerue , she attended one-room schools on Arnold Road and Van Rensselaer Road, now County Route 28. Her father was a well-known barber and a musician in the old city band.
She married Roy V. Martin on Aug. 18, 1934, at St. Mary's Cathedral with Monsignor B. Louis Berube officiating. Mr. Martin was a mechanic at Diamond National until 1960, when he retired in ill health. He died Nov. 7, 1961.
Surviving are a daughter and her husband, a son and his wife, a brother, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Patricia Sarah Dempsey, died Aug. 12, 1991, a son, Joseph Vincent, died Dec. 6, 2003, and a brother, J. Harold Jerue , died Sept. 2, 1967.
The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
