Dr. Marvin P. Knight lived to be 91 years old. He was the former team physician for Dallas Cowboys. Former players, coaches and associates of Dr.Knight, the Dallas Cowboys' team physician for more than 25 years during the Tom Landry era, gathered for his memorial service.
Dr. Knight died of a heart attack Sunday at a hospital in Muenster, Texas, where he lived on a ranch.
A memorial service was held in the Ellis Chapel of Park Cities Baptist Church. He was buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park in a private ceremony. A second memorial service was held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster.
"He loved medicine, he loved the Cowboys, and he loved Hereford cattle," said his daughter, Betty Knight Taylor of Dallas.
Dr. Knight was the Cowboys' team physician from their 1960 inception, said Tex Schramm, former team president and general manager.
"They used to come from all over the country to have him operate on them," Mr. Schramm said. "He was the Number 1 guy in sports orthopedic surgery."
With his white Stetson, Dr. Knight was a sideline fixture from the team's days in the Cotton Bowl until he moved to his 2,600-acre ranch near Muenster in 1972.
For years after his move to Muenster, many Cowboys players traveled there for surgery.
Whether it was a family member, a coach or a player, Dr. Knight was frank, said his son, Dr. Marvin P. Knight Jr. of Gainesville. The doctor often found himself at odds with coaches who wanted players on the field, even though they weren't medically ready to play, the younger Dr. Knight said.
"He was a crusty, tough guy as far as his demeanor, but he was absolutely a wonderful person," Mr. Schramm said. "He would do anything for you. He eventually became one of my best friends."
Dr. Knight's first love was ranching, but he liked to say he had to become a doctor to become a rancher, Ms. Taylor said.
The son of a railroad worker, the elder Dr. Knight was born in Moran, Texas. He worked his way through Howard Payne College and Baylor University School of Medicine, his son said.
As a young man, Dr. Knight ran a medical clinic in a West Texas oil field in Kermit, where he was recognized for his work with bones and joints. Dr. Knight sought further orthopedic training at Steindler Clinic at Iowa University.
After completing his orthopedic training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Dr. Knight served in the Army in Central and South America and in the Pacific. He received the Legion of Merit for meritorious service.
After the war, Dr. Knight set up an orthopedic practice in Dallas in 1945.
In addition to his son and daughter, Dr. Knight is survived by another son, Dr. Walter Knight of Dallas; four grandchildren; and one great--grandchild.

After the war, Dr. Knight set up an orthopedic practice in Dallas in 1945.
