Dr. Donald Smith Fincher, 79, of Galax, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va. Dr. Fincher was born March 11, 1930, in Mecklenburg County, N.C., to the late Benjamin Clark Fincher and Ethel Smith Fincher, youngest of nine children. He graduated from Matthews High School, Matthews, N.C. in 1948, and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C. in 1952. An Honor Student at N. C. State, he was a member of the Golden Key, Alpha Zeta and ROTC. He entered the United States Army as Infantry Second Lt. in June 1952 and served as Platoon and Company Commander at Infantry Center, Ft. Banning, Ga. and in the Korean War. In summer of 1954, Dr. Fincher entered N.C. State Graduate School in Bacteriology and was employed by Rolloins State Diagnostic Research Laboratory. He entered the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine in 1955, and graduated with honors in 1959. He was a member of Alpha Psi, Blue Key and active in student affairs as President of University of Georgia Independent Men.
Dr. Fincher practiced Veterinary Medicine in Little Rock, Ark., and in Taylorsville, N.C. He established his own practice in Sparta, N.C., and moved to Galax to open Galax Veterinary Clinic in 1966. He became active in the Galax Community serving on the Galax School Board and was one of the originators of the Galax High School Athletics Boosters and Athletics Boosters All Sports Program. He was a former member of the Galax Lions Club, Charter member of the Galax Theatre Guild, Precinct Chairman of the Galax Democratic Committee, member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as a former Lay Leader and Sunday School teacher.
Dr. Fincher was instrumental in starting the Galax SPCA and in getting the Galax Carroll Grayson Animal Shelter constructed by providing shelter facilities on Galax Veterinary Clinic property for 8 years prior to building the shelter.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lois Isenhour Hilliard Fincher; daughter, Connie Hilliard Werle and husband, Robert Werle, and grandchildren, Graham and Layne Werle, of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; sons, Lonnie "Chip" Hilliard and partner, Dr. Terry Larsen, of Pasadena, Calif., and Dr. Clark Fincher and wife, Robin Fincher, of Galax; sisters, Hazel F. Robinson, of Matthews, N.C., and Peggy F. Griffin, of Gastonia, N.C., and their families; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy F. Oden, Virginia Fincher, Madrid F. Tunderburk; brothers, Dr. Curtis Fincher, Benjamin C. Fincher, Jr. and Herbert W. Fincher.
A service in celebration of Dr. Fincher's life will be conducted by Dr. Robert Dendy and the Rev. Walt Simmerman at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church, Galax, Va. Interment will follow at Felts Memorial Cemetery. Family will receive friends Monday, June 1, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. at VaughanGuynn Funeral Home.

Dr. Donald "Doc" Fincher will be sorely missed by family, friends, the staff of Galax Public Library and all creatures great and small.
