John was the oldest son of Albert Jans Vredeveld and Aaltje Leutscher. His Dutch name was Jan. He immigrated to America around 1888, the first of the family. Johns father had died in 1877, he had lived at home with his mother, stepfather Jan Bazuin, two brothers and sister. John moved to the Dutch settlement in northwest Iowa when he came over. His mother and siblings followed him about four years later. John and Reta moved from Hull, Iowa to Washington state in about 1900. Around this time he chose to spell his last name Vredevelt with a t on the end rather than the customary d. He was a farmer and a carpenter in Snohomish Washington. His brother Berend moved from northwest Iowa to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1924. Brother Albert and sister Lamka never married.
