Birth: Nov. 23, 1890
Death: Oct. 21, 1976

Martha Ella Armstreet was born in Shelby county Texas some time around Thanksgiving in 1890. She was not sure of the date so she picked Nov. 23 as her birthday. Her mother died when she was 14 years old. She then married John Jackson Scott who was 24 years her senior. They moved to Shreveport Lousiana taking with them her brother Will(15) and sister Kate (7). Mr. Scott as she called him went to work for KCS railroad. Three years later when she was 17 she gave birth to her first born a son, John Jay Scott. Three years passed and she gave birth to a daughter, Ella May Scott. Mr. Scott was moved North to work on the KCS section gang between Winthrop and Allene Arkansas bringing his family with him. Three more years and she gave birth to another daughter, Katelee Muriel Scott at Winthrop. Mr Scott quit the rail road and started farming in the Little River bottoms where their 3rd daughter Iva Lenny Scott was born when Martha was 27 years old. The next year Mr. Scott took pneumonia and died leaving her with 4 children the oldest was 10 ,the youngest 1. Her and the boy farmed the next year or so but she wanted her children in school because she valued education, so she moved to Winthrop. Martha was a remarkable woman with only a 4th grade education she made a living for her family washing& ironing clothes, chopping cotton never remarring or even having a man friend. All three of the girls graduated from high school with honors and the boy went to work on the railroad before finishing. Times were hard but she did all she could during the day but at night she said her prayers and gave thanks to the Lord not worring about tomorrow and went to sleep.
