He was killed in an explosion and fire aboard the battleship USS Iowa about 300 miles northeast of Puerto Rico. The explosion occurred at 9:55am in turret two, as the center gun was being loaded. Forty-seven crewmen lost their lives. The ship was participating in firing exercises during maneuvers with the US Second Fleet.
