Norma Ellis Hall Westall

born about 1931

Burnsville, N.C. - Norma Ellis Hall Westall, a vivacious redhead in her younger days whose enthusiasm and strong faith remained constant throughout her life, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care in Burnsville. She was 77.

A lifelong resident of Yancey County, N.C., Norma was the daughter of Shelby and Ruby Clontz Hall and grew up in Micaville with five sisters, Alma, Wilma, Glenna, Donna and Jewel Hall; and brother Terry Hall, former Yancey County sheriff and a colorful local figure for years. All now deceased.

Norma had fond memories of her years at Micaville High School, where she played on the championship basketball team and graduated at the top of her class. After attending business school in Pennsylvania, Norma married Phil Westall. The two settled in Burnsville and Norma worked as a cost accountant at Mohasco Mills and at Feldspar Corporation while raising their two sons Robert and Gregory. She was active in her church, Micaville Presbyterian, for many years as part of the choir and a frequent soloist.

Passionate about local history and genealogy, Norma devoted many hours to research of the subject. She volunteered her time to the Yancey History Association and contributed to the Toe River Valley Heritage series. For her help in providing research and photos for the award-winning bookThey Won't Hang A Woman, Norma was honored with special thanks from Author Maxine McCall. Norma enjoyed singing The Ballad of Frankie and Johnnie at a number of functions related to the book.

A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Norma leaves behind her husband of 56 years, Phil Westall; sons, Robert and Gregory Westall; grandsons, Evan, Carson, Bryce and Marshall Westall; and daughters-in-law Cynthia Van Deusen and Julianne Hall.

Memorial services were held at the Yancey History Association building in Burnsville on May 10. Donations may be made to the Yancey History Association, 11 Academy St., Burnsville, NC 28714.
