ETHELBERT C. HIBBEN
Mr. Hibben was the son of Thomas Hibben, and was born in Wilmington, Ohio, in 1824. At an early age he came to this State, and during 1839-40 worked in the store of his brother George in Rushville. He then came to Indianapolis and read law in the office of Governor Witcomb, being admitted to the bar in 1845. Some two years later he accompanied Senator Lane to Oregon, settling in Portland, where he edited the paper which was established as the organ of the Democratic party. In 1859 he returned to Indiana, and in the following year was married to Miss Gertrude Robinson, daughter of John L. Robinson, in Rushville. She, with a daughter age eleven years, the sole issue of their marriage, survives him. Two brothers of Mr. Hibben and a sister (Mrs. Lida Mauzy of Rushville), also survive him. Of the brothers, George resides in Chicago, and James S. lives here, being the senior member of the firm of Hibben, Pattison & Co.
