John D. Berlin died at the residence of his son-in-law, L.B. Winder in Locke, Elkhart county, Indiana on November 11, 1879 of Lithiasis, aged 86 years, 11 months and 3 days.
The deceased was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania from whence he removed to Columbiana county, Ohio, where on the 16th of February, 1826 he was married to Miss Susan Huffman and resided there up to 1846, when he removed to Rootstown, Portage county and lived there 18 years, until 1864 when he became a resident of Elkhart county, where he resided up to the time of his death. He was the father of 10 children - 4 boys and 6 girls. The boys are all dead, two leaving families in Elkhart county. Four of the daughters live in Elkhart county, one in Lacygne, Kansas and one in Rootstown, Ohio, Mrs. G.W. Green. Mr. Berlin was a very modest, unpretentious man of sterling honesty and uprightness of character. Virtues which he imparted to his children and has made them honored and respected by all who know them.
