Jonathan Swift was born to Deacon Jireh and Deborah (Hathaway) Swift in Acushnet, Massachusetts in 1730. He was the oldest child of six children born to Jireh and Deborah. His great grandfather was William Swyft (1592-1642) who settled in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and he is also related to many of the early New England families such as Hathaway, Warren (of Mayflower), Cooke (of Mayflower), Tobey, Gibbs, and Perry.

At the age 22 years, Jonathan was married to Elizabeth Bourne on October 16, 1753 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Elizabeth's ancestral family has branches into many of the well known New England families including generation grandparents of Skiff, Chipman, Gorham, Otis and Howland families. Her parents were John and Mercy (Hinckley) Bourne of Barnstable County.

Jonathan and Elizabeth had two sons and three daughters known to me.

1. John Swift, b. 1754

2. David Swift, b. 1756; d. 1830; m. Bere Cynthia Morse in Falmouth on Sep. 24, 1786. Bere Cynthia Morse was the daughter of Captain Theodore Morse and Susannah Davis (widow Phinney).

3. Abigail Swift, b. 1757; d. 1811 in Plymouth; m. Zebulon Haskell on Oct. 19, 1775. They had one child known to me, Abiah Haskell.

4. Susannah Swift, b. 1762.

5. Elizabeth Swift, b. 1763.

Jonathan died in Dartmouth at age 32, in 1763. After Jonathan's early death, his widow Elizabeth married again on July 31, 1766 to Thomas Tabor.
