LOWELL -- Marie F. Connolly, a Lowell resident who was a Korean War veteran and retired as a staff sergeant after a 20-year career in the Air Force, died yesterday, Dec. 8, after a brief illness, at Town and Country Nursing Center in Lowell. She was 83.
She was born in Boston, Jan. 21, 1922 and was educated in that area. After graduating from high school, she went to work for Western Union as a teletype operator.
In April of 1952, Miss Connolly joined the Air Force during the Korean War. While in the Air Force, she worked in communications, and was stationed in Germany, and throughout the United States before her retirement in June of 1972 at the rank of staff sergeant.
According to family members, her faith and her service to her country were her two passions in life.
She made her home in Chelmsford's northern section of town before residing in Lowell and was a parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church.
In addition to her love of traveling, she was an avid reader, and she enjoyed spending the holidays with her family and friends.
She is survived by her dear friends, Joan Mills and her husband, Lenny of North Chelmsford, David L. Mills and his wife, Anne Marie of Tigard, Ore., and Timothy M. Mills of North Chelmsford.
She also leaves her friends at the Town and Country Nursing Center, all of whom were very special to her.
She was also the cousin of the late Gertrude V. and Mildred Glennon; and was the best friend of the late Staff Sgt. Claire Yuhas.
