Obituary published in the Irish American Weekly, New York, New York, on Saturday, July 7, 1906, on page 5, as follows:

Mrs. Elizabeth M. J. Meagher, widow of Gen. Thomas F. Meagher, who led the Irish Brigade in the Civil War, died on July 5, at her home in Rye, Winchester County, of heart disease. She was born in Southfield, Orange County, N.Y., on June 21, 1830, and was a daughter of Peter Townsend.

Mrs. Meagher's ancestors were well known in Colonial times. Her great-grandfather made some of the chain that was stretched across the Hudson during the Revolutionary War to prevent the British from ascending the river above West Point. Mrs. Meagher met her husband in this city after the '48 movement while he was an exile from Ireland. The fact that she was Protestant, and he a Catholic, caused her family to discountenance the engagement of the couple. She became a Catholic, and while on a visit to her husband's father, who was Mayor of Waterford City, Ireland, was christened by Bishop, afterwards Cardinal McCloskey of New York. She attended her husband in the Civil War, when he was made Lieutenant Governor of Montana. After the war, she went with him to Helena. Mrs. Meagher was President of the House of Calvary in Perry Streeet, this city, and was later vested in the House of the Good Shepherd and the House of the Holy Trinity. She recently presented all her late husband's flags to the Catholic Protectory. Her funeral took place this morning frm St. Francis Xavier's Church, West 16th street. Rev. Thomas J. Campbell, S.J., being the celebrant of the Requiem Mass."

There is a discrepancy concerning her birth date from her Obituary and what is shown on her tombstone."
