Policeman Meiers was accidentally shot and killed inside the 12th and Pine streets station. He had asked to look at the pistol of another officer when it went off accidentally. Policeman Meiers was on light duty at the station after having been wounded in March 1928 when he shot and killed a gangster named Jacob Schwartz during an attempted robbery of a speakeasy near 16th and Wood streets.

"MEIERS – Suddenly, July 7, 1932, JOSEPH C., beloved husband of Elizabeth M. Meiers (nee McWilliams), aged 48. Relatives and friends, League of the Sacred Heart, Phila. Police Dept., and 8th and 13th District Police are invited to the funeral Tues., 8.30 A. M., from his late residence, 378 N. 23d st. Solemn Requiem Mass, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 10 A. M. Int. Holy Cross Cem."
