Memorial Service
Sylvia Gilbert Underwood was born March 17, 1919 - with twin brother Gordon Mayhew Underwood at their parents' ranch in South Spring just outside Roswell New Mexico.
During her younger years she traveled frequently throughout Nevada, Arizona and California, Colorado and Wyoming on family road trips camping and fishing. In 1929, the family sold the ranch and moved to San Diego. They returned to Roswell briefly, but moved to California for good in July of 1931, taking up residence in Ontario, California.
Sylvia graduated from Chaffey Union High School in Ontario in June 1937, and attended Chaffey Junior College for one year. During this time she played violin in the school orchestra and at the Ontario Foursquare Church, where she met and fell in love with the young orchestra leader and trumpet player from Pomona.
She married Frederick Edward Starling, her husband of 57 years, on November 6, 1938, at The Cathedral of the Foothills in Upland, CA. They resided in North Hollywood for several years, during which time both of their daughters were born.
In 1947 Sylvia and Fred and family moved to Pomona, while still attending the Ontario Foursquare Church, but after their son was born in 1952, transferred their membership to the Pomona Foursquare Church.
In 1961 the family moved to Northridge, and later Simi Valley, where they joined and served in the First Baptist Church for many years. As Fred's work directed, the family finally moved to Lancaster, CA., where they lived and served in their church over the past 39 years. Sylvia and Fred were dedicated to their Christian faith, and served faithfully wherever they attended church, lastly at Grace Chapel.
Sylvia was committed to her family and home. She sewed clothes for her family, and loved trying new recipes. She was an artist, and excelled at presenting family holiday dinners. Area 51 near her Roswell home held a particular fascination for her. She loved crossword puzzles, red beets, pistachio ice cream, Coca Cola, "I Love Lucy" and the Blue Danube Waltz. And no matter the occasion, Sylvia was always in style.
Memories of Sylvia will live on far beyond today.
