Mary Ellen was born to Benneville "Benjamin" and Hannah Boyer Frederick in Franconia, Montgomery Co., PA. Her siblings were William Harry & Elizabeth Lillian "Lillie" Frederick. Mother Hannah died about 1854. Benneville "Benjamin" then married Maria Anna Eckler of Pine Grove, Schuylkill Co., PA. on July 25, 1856 in Pine Grove. Benjamin, Mary Ann and the three children located to South Bend, IN where several of her sisters were already living. Benjamin and Mary Ann became the parents of George W Frederick in 1858. On the 12th of May 1861 - Benjamin enlisted in the Civil War - Reporting to Camp Ellis in Goshen, Indiana. Unfortunately - He died of Typhoid Fever "In Camp" at Clear Creek, MS. He was interred at Corinth National Cemetery. Mary Ann was left to raise the four children.

Mary Ellen Frederick was wed to Claude Clark Appleton on May 8, 1869 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN. They became the parents of eleven children - namely: Ida, Archibald "Archie", Cora, Bert, Georgianna, Dora, Richard Adolphus, Olive Appleton Pond Crimp, Mabel, Grace and LeRoy Appleton.

Claude "Clark" was employed as a Carriage Painter in South Bend, Des Moines, Iowa, Rockford and Joliet, Illinois. They spent their final days in Los Angeles, CA. Claude passed away at the Soldier's Home in Los Angeles on August 15, 1928 followed by Internment at Los Angeles National Cemetery. Mary Ellen Frederick Appleton passed away on May 18, 1931.
