Austin J. Chapman served as a Sergeant in Company C of the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War.

After the Civil War, he served for many years in Company A of the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment, retiring as a 1st Sergeant.

He was a son of Sullivan Chapman and Nancy Emeline (Loomis) Chapman.

He also served as Superintendent of the Gettysburg National Cemetery from 1915 to 1918.


AUSTIN J. CHAPMAN, Superintendent of the Soldiers' National Cemetery, died on Monday from heart disease aged 75 years. He had been in poor health for some time, but was going about, being out of doors on Sunday.

He was a Civil War veteran, serving four years in the 12th Wisconsin Infantry, having been a resident of Wisconsin when he enlisted. After the war he served 15 years in the Regular Army, retiring with the rank of Sergeant. He was appointed Superintendent of the National Cemetery in June 1915, coming here from the National Cemetery at City Point, Virginia. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He leaves his wife, one daughter, and two sons: Mrs. James Coffey, of Washington, D.C.: A. A. Chapman, of Marshall, Texas: and Albert Chapman, of Augusta, Texas.

He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on April 21, 1918.
