Son of Walter Thom [1770-1824] who was a successful printer in Dublin.
Born at Bervie, Kincardineshire [now Aberdeenshire], Scotland.
his paternal grandfather was a linen manufacturer.
his maternal grandfather was John Turner, of Turner Hall, Aberdeen

Educated at The High School, Edinburgh.
He died at his home, Donnycarney House, Dublin.

Alexander Thom was married twice.
His first wife was Maria Dillon Thom, b. 1797, d. 18 March 1867, at Farnham Asylum, Finglas. It is possible that she was buried in this plot.
[This info has been given by Colin Thom who is a great great grandson of Alexander Thom.]

His second wife was Sarah McCulloch, daughter of the famous economist John Ramsey McCulloch [1789-1864] [See DNB]
She was the widow of a man named Mackay, with whom she had at least one son, William Lindsay Mackay, who is also buried here.
Alexander Thom and Sarah McCulloch were married on 16 May 1870, at Edinburgh, Scotland.

The entry for Thom in DNB, says his father Walter was born in Bervie, and that Alexander was born at Findhorn, Moray, whereas Bervie is noted as Alexander's birthplace on the headstone.

Shortly before his death, Alexander Thom is said to have given control of his businesses to his son-in-law, Frederick Pilkington, of whom nothing is yet known.
