Godfrey Cheshire was born 1893 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, NC the youngest of 6 known surviving children (3 boys/3 girls) born to Episcopal Bishop Joseph Blount Cheshire II and his wife Annie Huske Webb, who was also his first cousin.

Godfrey is descended from some of the most prominent families in NC on both sides of his family tree. He was the paternal grandson of Rev. Joseph Blount Cheshire Sr. rector of Tarboro's Calavary Episcopal Church and Scotland Neck's Trinity Episcopal for almost 30 years, and his wife, Elizabeth Toole Parker, daughter of wealthy merchant & planter, Theophilus Parker of Tarboro. He was gr-grandson of John Cheshire II and Elizabeth Ann Blount of Edenton; and gr-gr-grandson of this family's patriarch, John Cheshire I, who came to Norfolk, VA in 1750 from Liverpool, England and later settled in Edenton, Chowan Co, NC. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of James Webb Jr. & (2nd wife) Sara Frances Cheshire of Hillsboro, NC.

Godfrey was about 4 years old when his mother died in 1897, and two years later his father married (2nd) Elizabeth "Beth" Lansdale Mitchell of Maryland, by whom no children were born.

Godfrey graduated from The University of the South, today called Sewanee, in Tennessee. In about 1916, the 23-year old married 25-year old Alice Calder Shiell of New Orleans, daughter of Scottish immigrant William Shiell and his wife, Emily Pasteur Calder.

The couple set up housekeeping in Raleigh where Godfrey later worked in the insurance industry. The couple would be parents to 4 known children:

* Alice Cheshire (1917-2014) m. Henry Dockery Haywood
* Godfrey "Buddy" Cheshire Jr. (1918-) m. Elizabeth "Sis" Siilver.
* Annie Webb Cheshire (1920-1980) m. Charles Meridith de la Vergne.
* Emily S. Cheshire (1924-) m.John Covington Dockery, III.

For many years, Godfrey was a member of the NC Militia where he rose to rank of Colonel and was commanding officer of the NC 113th Field Artillery in Raleigh.

Godfrey Cheshire died in 1972 at age 79. His wife survived him 6 years, passing in 1978 at age 86.

Godrey's grandson and namesake, Godfrey Cheshire III is co-founder of Raleigh's Spectator Magazine (c. 1978) and is the well-known N.Y. Times film critic, film writer and producer of the 2008 documentary, "Moving Midway", that chronicles the history and relocation of his relative's plantation house, Midway, built by Charles Lewis Hinton in 1848 as a wedding gift to his son David Hinton and bride Mary Boddie Carr, sister of NC Governor Elias Carr.
