Bishop of London from 1675. He was the youngest son of Spencer Earl of Northampton, who was killed at Hopton-Heath, looking for King Charles. He was made Bishop of Oxford in 1674, and Bishop of London the next year. His eagerness for the Protestant religion exposed him to terrible anger of King James, who suspended him from his episcopal functions from September 1686 to September 1688. Later he had the satisfaction of placing the crown on the Prince of Orange's head, after he some years earlier carried out the marriage ceremony between him and his illustrious confort, whose sister, afterwards Queen Anne, he united to Prince George of Denmark.
