Her great grandfather Lieut Francois Amable Monty(1735-1809) was a lieutenant in the Continental Army, Livingston's Regiment Capt Allen's Company. He was a member of a regiment made up of citizen's of Quebec Canada.

Her mother was born in Canada and she was born in a town in New York that was both close to the Canadian border and the border of the State of Vermont. The area is known for it's French Heritage.

The Monty family immigrated from St Bernard France to Chambly Quebec Canada then after a few generations to New York.

The name Benway is an Americanized version of the French name Benoit, pronounced ben-WAH.

Eli Benway's first wife is listed in one publication as Charlotte Monty and as Mary Monta in census and other records.

She is listed as Mary Maria Monti on the death certificate of her son Henry Charles Benway.
