Carl served as a Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17G (#43-38072), 848th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Wyandotte County, Kansas prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 18, 1944 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was noted as being Single, without dependents.

Carl was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was rammed
by an ME-262 jet fighter, and the bomber was cut in half, with the tail section separating relatively intact, allowing the rear gunner, Sgt. Craig M. Bennett, to parachute to the ground where he was taken as a POW and survived the war.

Carl was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on August 24, 1950.
