A graduate of the US Military Academy in 1875, he was appointed to the regular Army for service with Company H, 20th Infantry; he remained with this unit his whole career. He served on the frontier for many years and spent several years in Fort Assiniboine, South Dakota. He was stationed with his regiment in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas during his final years of service. He was promoted to Captain in 1894 and retired shortly thereafter. He went totally blind, a condition that likely contributed to his death by bromide overdose.

He established his family's eligibility when he joined the Sons of the American Revolution; qualifying on both sides of his ancestry. His paternal great-grandfather was Alexander Sharp who served with the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania militia. His maternal great-grandfather was George Dent who served as a first lieutenant with the third battalion, Maryland Flying Camp.
