Alvin Arthur Stearns
1919-2006
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Church of the Nazarene in Bishop to honor the life of longtime Bishop resident Alvin Arthur Stearns Jr.

Born on June 5, 1919 in Chloride, Ariz., Alvin died peacefully on Jan. 13, 2006.

Alvin served in New Guinea with the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service, he returned home to begin a lifelong career as a stone mason. In 1947 Alvin met Mary Louise Brunstein and fell in love at first sight. The couple soon married, and raised their family of six children in Southern California. Early in their marriage, Alvin and Mary accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. This led to the legacy of faith in God and love of mankind that Alvin left for each one of his children to follow.

In 1973, Alvin semi-retired and he and Mary fulfilled a long-standing dream of moving to Bishop. Some of his masonry skills can still be seen at many locations, including The Neighborhood Church and the Church of the Nazarene. Alvin lived every day of his life loving his family and enjoying the beauty of the Owens Valley, which he often referred to as "God's Country." The joy of his life was encouraging others by sharing the love of God with them. He also enjoyed golf, fishing and enjoying his beautiful roses.

In spite of the dementia he suffered during his last few years, Alvin never forgot the love had for God and his beloved wife, Mary. After Mary's death in August 2004, his children took over the love and care of their father until his passing.

In addition to his wife, Alvin was preceded in death by their son, Scott, and his brother Bill.

Alvin is survived by two sons, Michael and Alvin of Whitefish, Mont.; three daughters Linda Bulpitt of Arlington, Texas, Laura Smith of Bishop and Diane Klink of Whitefish; three loving sisters; 27 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Alvin's memory to the Alzheimer's Day Care Center of the Methodist Church in Bishop.
