Claude M. Knudson was born October 18, 1899, in Deerhorn township, Wolverton, Minnesota. He attended grade school in Reiner Twp, Pennington Co, MN; then spent two years at the Crookston Agricultural College. In 1920, Claude moved to Gully, MN, with his parents to build and operate an auto livery and repair garage with his father, Anton. They added a 110 volt, gas engine powered light plant that energized Gully from 1921 to 1927. Claude owned and operated silent movie shows on Friday and Saturday nights in Gully and Leonard auditoriums. He also sold Standard Oil petroleum, Dodge automobiles, and gained a reputation of the best acetylene welder in the county. February 19, 1921, Claude and Alice Solien were married in Crookston, MN. In 1927 the Knudsons went bankrupt and Claude moved his family to Gonvick where he hired out as a mechanic for Les Reimer Ford. They returned to Gully in 1928 and again began a garage business with his father, Anton, in a refurbished store building selling Dodge and Plymouth automobiles.

By 1934, in addition to the garage business, Claude operated a hay baling and trucking crew that shipped out over 200 carloads of hay to western drought areas. This business continued as supplement to garage and in 1938 a new garage was built. During the war years, Claude also operated a logging camp crew near Blackduck, Minn.

In 1946, they sold the garage to the newly forming Gully Farmers Union Coop Oil Association. Son Virgil returned from the service and formed a partnership entitled Knudson Baling Company headquartered in Gully with a newly built shop. They purchased land totaling 1,100 acres and at times employed 20 men in baling and trucking operations.

On March 26, 1962, Claude had an auction sale and sold his farm, retiring to full time gas engine restoration and travel. He died August 19, 1976 in the Fosston hospital and is buried in Lund Cemetery, Gully, Minnesota.

He was survived by his wife, Alice, three sons, Virgil, Winton and Forrest, 12 grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Ray Knudson.
