Francis Howard Thorpe is the son of Thomas Henry Thorpe and Mary A. Curley.

He married Aniela E. Cenar.

Obituary; Holyoke Transcript-Telegram, Tuesday, June 14, 1955, page 4:
Francis H. Thorpe, Sr. of 473 South St., who retired in 1953 after 30 years service with the Holyoke Fire Dept., well known Legionnaire and sportsman, died suddenly late Monday afternoon.
He was stricken while visiting his daughter, Mrs. Robert Charpentier of 353 Westfield Rd. Death was due to cerebral hemorrhage, according to the Medical Examiner Edmund J. Zielinski.
Born in Holyoke, son of Thomas and Mary (Curly) Thorpe, he received his education in the local schools.
On June 29, 1923 he was appointed to the Holyoke Fire Department by the late Mayor John F. Cronin and served for 30 years until retiring on Oct. 23, 1953. He was assigned to the Elmwood station before his retirement.
A veteran of World War I he was a member of Holyoke Post 25, American Legion for many years and served as the post commander this year. He was to be one of the post`s delegates to the Massachusetts State Department American Legion convention to be held this weekend in Revere.
One of the organizers of the Elmwood Sporting club, he developed the club`s pond of the Apremont Highway and was active in the promotion of its affairs, including the directing of skating schools at the pond during the winter season. Offices he held in the organization included those of secretary-treasurer and president.
He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the Blessed Sacrament church and the Massachusetts Fireman`s Assn.
Besides his wife, the former Aniela Cennar, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Phillipa E. Gablik of the Azores and Mrs. Charpentier of this city; two sons, Francis H. Jr. of the U. S. Navy stationed in Japan, and Peter Thorpe U.S. Air Force, stationed in Africa; a sister, Mrs. Helen Borlen of this city; three brothers, Edward, Henry and William Thorpe, all of Holyoke; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from the John B. Shea funeral home Thursday morning, followed by a solemn high mass of requiem at Blessed Sacrament church. Burial will be in St. Jerome cemetery.
