Mary Magdalena's parents were Joel Buffington and Elizabeth Logan. The link for his grave memorial is found below at the bottom of this page. The location of where Elizabeth was buried is unknown but it may have been in Meigs county, Ohio across from Buffington's Island in the Ohio River. This is because her husband Joel's gravestone was found at the edge of a farm field in Meigs county and then moved out to Iowa.
Magdalena was married to Thomas Dewitt (1791-1879) about 1815 in what is now Jackson Co, WV.
Their children were:
1814 – 1857 (MO)
m. Simon Lauck
1816 – 1890 (MO)
m. Rachel Mairs
Margaret Lydia Dewitt (MO)
1819 – 1890
m. Daniel Rowland
1823 – 1849 (VA)
m. Mary Romaine
1827 – 1844 (VA)
Alexander C Dewitt
1827 – 1874 (WVA)
m. Miriam Carney
Zadock Hannibow (Hannibal?) Dewitt
~1830 – after 1859 (VA?)
m. Amanda Campbell
Thomas Buffington DeWitt Sr.
1832 – 1891 (CA)
m1. Frances Carney
m2. Madlain McCullough
Henry Sherman DeWitt
1837 – 1910 (MO)
m. Minerva Jane Milhoan
1837 – 1870 (WVA)
Phoebe Ann DeWitt
1842 – 1911 (WVA)
m. John Boles Larkin
I have been trying to find all of the graves of their children. See links below.
Memorials have been created for the two listed immediately below, but the locations of their burials is unknown.
Nancy (1814-1857) died in Carroll Co, MO and married Simon Lauck.
Zadock Hannibow (Hannibal?) (~1830-after 1859?) who married Amanda Campbell in 1850.
As shown in the attached photos, in 2015 a letter was found that was addressed to Magdalene in April 1879 living at Muses Bottom, Jackson Co., WV. (Muses Bottom is the area along the Ohio River in Jackson Co, WV at which the Dewitt farm was located at the north end.) The letter was sold on Ebay to an unknown buyer but fortunately someone on Pinterest posted the letter page images. The letter was from a grand-daughter (in-law) R A Rowland (whose husband was Thomas D Rowland) living in Parkersburg, Wood Co., WV. She was sending her condolences about the recent death of Magdalena's husband Thomas Dewitt in March 1879. Thomas Rowland was a son of Magdalena's daughter Lydia DeWitt who married Daniel Rowland or Rollins. R A Rowland was Roanna Arnold Webb (1837-1906). (Her memorial may be found via the link below to Magdalene's daughter Lydia Dewitt Rowland and then Lydia's son Thomas.))
The 1880 census listed Magdalene living as a widow in Grant District in Jackson Co, WV. This district included the region in the county north of Ravenswood and included the family property. Her grandsons James and John were living with her on the date of the census (Jul 1 1880.)
We have not found exactly where she was living after that but probably remained on the farm or nearby. Her grandsons did not sell the property until 1924 so it is safe to believe Magdalena died on the farm. They were sons of Magdalena's son John Dewitt and his wife Mary Romaine who died prematurely in 1849 and 1848. Their children were raised by Thomas and Magdalena and the boys James D and John C DeWitt remained on the family farm.
We do not know where Magdalene was buried. Records list her death in Murraysville, Jackson Co, WV which is up the river about two miles from the family farmland. She is probably buried in the Dewitt cemetery and is the reason for placement of this memorial in said cemetery on FindAGrave.
