Obit: "Joseph Allen succumbs to Long Illness"
Joseph R. Allen, a native of this community and brother of Dr. Lee G. Allen of Litchfield died at _____ oclock this morning in St. Francis hospital where he had been apatient since 1942 suffering from a heart ailment.
Mr. Allen was 77 years old. He was born in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood of Zanesville township, the third of nine children of the late William Lee and Amanda C. Potts Allen.
He was a barber here for many years, opening a shop on East K_____ham street near the post office as a young man. He left Litchfield for California in about 1926.
He was married to Mrs. Dora Bateman in February 1895. She died about 3ight years ago in Los Angeles. A stepson, Walter Bakeman, died in World War I and is buried in Elmwood cemetery. A stepdaughter, Blanche, died on the west coast in 1941. A daughter, Mabel Grace, died in infancy.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Allen of Los Angeles, a former Litchfield city clerk; three brothers Lee G Allen, Claude and Temple Allen of Litchfield and a sister, Mrs. Frank B. Smith of Pittsburgh, Pa.
The body lies in state at Carroll & Son funeral home where services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Warren Leonard, pastor of the Union Avenue Christian church. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery by the side of his step son.
