Miss Alma Bryant, principal of Alba for 35 years, dies at 92

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala.-Retired educator Alma Bryant who was principal of Alba School here for 35 years, died Sunday.
Miss Bryant, 92, was known throughout the community, was born Jan 14, 1894. Her parents were John Jackson Bryant from Massachusetts, a boatman and shipbuilder, and Eugena Bosarge Bryant, a member of one of the oldest famies of Bayou La Batre.
Miss Bryant began her teaching carer on Daupphin Island in 1911 at the age of 17 shortly after her graduation from Barton Academy.
She went on to hold teaching positionsat Pleasant Progress and Coden before transferring to Alba when it replaced the old Bayou La Batre school in 1918. After two years, she was appointed principal, a position she held until 1955, when she resigned returned to teaching at Mobile County High School during her last few years with the school system before retiring.
After her retirement, Miss Bryant remained active in the community, addressing various educational and civic organizationsk playing an active role in her church and publishing numerous essays and speeches on a variety of topics, relating to education. Bayou La Batre history and her own experiences in both, including living throug the hurrican of 1906.
She received an education serShe was listed in Who's Who Among Alabama Women, served as president of the Epsilon chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma society international, Served as district president of the United Methodis Women and was active locally with the United Methodist Church, was a member of Bayou La Batre First United Methodist Church as was active in other civic and community activities in the Bayou La Batre area.
Survivors include four nieces, Mrs George Oaks, Mrs Gerald Bosarge, Mrs Harold Lyon and Mrs James Bosarge; three newphews, Oliver Bryant Norwood Bryant and John Bryant;and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday.
