JOHN B. SUING IS DEAD
Former County Commissioner and Well Known Farmer Passed Away

John B. Suing, former county commissioner of Cedar county and one of the best known farmers in the county, passed away at 10 o'clock Tuesday night at his home north of Fordyce after being ill several months. About two months ago his affliction was diagnosed as cancer of the stomach, so located that nothing could be done to prolong his life.

Mr. Suing was born at Baltimore, Md., June 14, 1854. The family moved to Dubuque, Ia., in 1857 and four years later, with seven other families decided to locate in the new country beyond the Missouri. The trip was made as far as Omaha on the then recently established railroad. At Omaha the party fell in with John Becker, of St. Helena, who urged them to locate in Cedar county and the trip was made by ox team, the party arriving July 3, 1861. The first winter log houses were erected but before roofs could be finished the winter came on and the canvass tops of the prairie schooners were the only coverings on the Suing house.

Mr. Suing grew to manhood and was married at St. Helena to Miss Matilda Becker, daughter of John Becker. Mr. Suing was an active figure in attracting new settlers to the county and in promoting their welfare. He took an active part in politics and served as county commissioner during the years 1902, '03 and '04, being elected on the democratic ticket. He possessed many attractive qualities and was highly esteemed.

The survivors include his wife and nine children, John, Fairfax, S.D.; George and Zeno, Fordyce; and Bruno and Alfred at home, Mrs. Fred Arens, Wynot; Mrs. Chas. Tigges, Fordyce; Mrs. Will Meirose, Wall, S. D. and Miss Edna Suing at home; also four brothers, H. B. Suing, Careywood, Ida.; J. A. Suing, St. Helena; P. J. Suing, Fordyce and A. F. Suing, Hartington, and four sisters, Mrs. Peter Dreesen and Mrs. Matt Dressen, Hartington, Mrs. J. J. Becker, Sioux City and Mrs. F. M. Goeden, ____.

The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Friday from St. John's Catholic church, Fordyce. Rev. _______ officiating.
