He was the Radio Operator aboard B-24D Liberator #42-40368. While underway on a training flight out of Blythe Army Air Base, his bomber suffered a catastrophic structural failure, flying at 15,000 feet (asl) and crashed eight miles northwest of Palm Springs, California. All nine crewmembers were killed. The tail section that had broken away, was found on a hillside more than two miles from the crash site.
