Noris G Nelson had a great love of airplanes and flying all of his life.

As a boy, Noris built model airplanes from wood and cloth. He dreamed of becoming an aviator. When WWII broke out he enlisted in the USAAF. He became a B-17 pilot. He was attached to the 306th Heavy Bomb Group / 367th Bomb Squadron, flying the B-17F known as the "Clay Pigeons"; tail sign, Triangle H. During 1944 and early 1945 he flew sixteen long range bombing missions over Nazi Germany. He was stationed at Thurleigh field in Bedford, England. After WWII he returned to Odessa, Texas and lived there for the rest of his life. He was married to Frances Lucile Ruckman in December 1947.

In June 2014 he was joined by his only sibling, a brother, Kay L Nelson (1925-2014).
