White Hall child beaten to death
Halli Burton killed in Joliet by man the mother reportedly met over the Internet.

A Joliet-area man has been charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of an 18-month-old girl from White Hall.

He reportedly met the girl's mother, Jessi Dunlap, on the Internet, and she and her daughter moved in with him Monday.

Elwood Police Chief David Albert and other Will County law enforcement agencies announced, in a press release Friday afternoon, first-degree murder charge against Lee K. Ponshe, 25, of the 500 block of Beattie Street, Elwood.

According to Chief Albert, Mr. Ponshe is charged in the beating death of Halli R. Burton, the 18-month old daughter of Ms. Dunlap and Josh Burton, of White Hall.

Chief Albert said the child and her mother lived in White Hall until they moved in with Mr. Ponshe on Monday after she struck up a relationship with him over the Internet.

On Wednesday at 7:40 p.m., the Elwood Fire Department responded to a call at Mr. Ponshe's residence reporting an unresponsive child. Paramedics notified Elwood Police and took the infant to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was pronounced dead at 8:05 p.m.

Chief Albert requested assistance from the Will County Sheriff's Department Investigation Unit. Officials from Will County State's Attorney's Office also were called in to review the case Thursday morning.

Will County Coroner Patrick O'Neil's office performed an autopsy on the 18-month-old child Thursday afternoon. The preliminary findings were that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Toxicology reports are pending.

The Elwood Police, Will County Crime Scene investigators and Will County detectives executed a search warrant at the Beattie Street address early Thursday evening. Mr. Ponshe was arrested later that night after the Will County state's attorney's office approved a charge of first-degree murder.

Mr. Ponshe was scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon for setting of bail.

Halli Burton's paternal grandparents are White Hall City Clerk Sue Reno and her husband, Jerry Reno, and Paul and Carla Burton; maternal grandparents are Bill and Mary Jane Dunlap, also of White Hall.
